Equality Leads To Binge Drinking
September 20, 2011 2 CommentsWorking drives women to drink.
A new study from the Washington University School of Medicine has found that women are catching up to men when it comes to alcohol use. Apparently, with equality also comes alcoholism and a beer belly.
The weirdest part of the new findings is its suggestion that the rise in working women since the end of WWII is to blame. Wait, what?
After the war ended, it is common knowledge that women began develop careers after taking over the jobs of men in order to sustain their country. Since 1945, women have become more and more dominant in their fields, working just as hard as the menfolk.
After a hard day’s work, most people would love a nice, tall, cold glass of beer. When the office goes out for a drink after work, the women join them. While it may be easy for them to keep up with the men at the workplace, it’s harder at the bar and women end up binge drinking to keep pace with their male counterparts.
Women may not be able to handle as much alcohol as men simply due to chemistry, but making it seem as though our advancement in the workplace is a health hazard is complete bullshit. While I can understand the concern for women who try to keep up with men to prove a point, blaming problems with alcohol on equality is just dumb.
I can guarantee that women of the 1940s drank almost just as much as they do today. But, as with everything else back then, it was done behind closed doors and with their husband as the only witness. Come on, now.

Me too. But then I think about being stuck in a house with two kids under 5, a mountain of housework and no adult conversation, and I think perhaps I was just destined for a daily drink.
