Sexist Sugar Cookies On Sale At “Racy” Bake Sale
September 26, 2011 No CommentsA little college bake sale has gone mad.
Angered by the possibility of affirmative action having an impact on college admissions, the Campus Republicans of Berkeley thought the best way to protest would be by baking a ton of treats and selling them to individuals — the catch is the prices are based on your race and sex. White men pay $2.00, Asian men pay $1.50, Latino men fork over $1.00, Black men spend $0.75 and Native American men pay $0.25. And women? They get an extra quarter off.
“We agree that the event is inherently racist, but that is the point,” the president of the organization, Shawn Lewis, told CNN. “It is no more racist than giving an individual an advantage in college admissions based solely on their race (or) gender.”
He pointed out that the Hispanic, Asian and female members of the club all agreed that the group should hold this bake sale. However, many students on campus have said the event makes them uncomfortable.
Speaking out about the bake sale, Tim Wise, author of White Like Me, called it a “rather smarmy slap at people of color.”
He argued against the premise of the event, saying that the change to college admissions was merely an attempt to counter the 12 years of institutionalized racism and sexism that some students had to suffer, “and it’s only at the point of college admissions that these folks seem to get concerned with color consciousness.”
Despite the controversy, the event is going forward as planned tomorrow. Who would have thought baked goods could go so bad?
