Touch Your Titties, Say Half-Naked Men
October 11, 2011 No CommentsThe act is far from sexual, but there’s something playful about a hot guy reminding you that you’re due for a breast exam. It makes an ordinary and mundane chore seem more exciting, like flipping your calendar every month to reveal another hunky male firefighter.
The new Rethink Breast Cancer campaign stimulates women’s visual senses in an effort to compel them to protect themselves against breast cancer.
In the video (see below), “TLC” is touch, look and check — all the steps a woman should take in performing a breast exam. According to Anthony (one of the hotties), you can touch your breasts “on your bed, in the mirror, or even in the shower.” Oh la la, don’t mind if I do!
As much fun as this video is, we can’t fail to notice its sexism. Shirtless men are trying to turn women on with their chiseled chests. But wait, it’s for a good cause. So is objectification okay in certain circumstances?
If the “Your Man Reminder” app is going to make women check their breasts regularly, why not? The video manages to be lighthearted despite the seriousness of breast cancer, and this approach may be appealing to women. Men may be showcasing their bodies, but preventative measures are still centre stage.
But there’s a danger in saying that objectification may be acceptable in some situations. How would we feel if women were in a similar video taking off their shirts, talking in a sexually suggestive manner and touching themselves in the shower to porn-style music.
Well, we would probably feel that we’ve seen it all before.
Apparently, “women are 88 percent more likely to watch a video if it features a really hot guy.” This means more attention on breast health.
Feminism isn’t about turning the tables on men, but in this case it’s for the greater good. And it seems like a small sacrifice when countless women may benefit from a friendly (and sexy) reminder.
It’s questionable whether the guys have to end up in their briefs, but whatever it takes to get the message across is a good thing.
