Yet Another Tale Of Weight Loss Success. Can We Shut Up About It Already?

October 20, 2011 No Comments

Are you tired of hearing people go on about weight loss? I sure am. And to add to the pot of self-loathing pot, Senator Claire McCaskill decided to announce to all of her Twitter followers that she was going to lose 50 pounds. And now she has reached her goal. Well, woop-de-doo to that.

“I’m tired of looking and feeling fat. Maybe talking about it publicly will keep me on track,” she tweeted in May to her Twitter family of 60,000 followers. She has since then kept her followers updated on her progress, inviting citizens into the real life of a senator who feels fat.

Sure, I may have tried this route before when I was in a weight obsession state of mind. But how can I sit back and not want to punch something due to the blatant sexism and weight obsession prevalent here? Would a male senator ever be caught dead publicly discussing his weight loss? Would any man for that matter? For some reason, we are expected to be constantly striving for a smaller size, constantly acknowledging our weight and the need to lose some pounds. Who decided that this was how life would be for us?

I wish that weight loss didn’t matter so much to even be news, but this is the world we live in.
