Dirty Minds, Dirty Money
October 25, 2011 No CommentsCanada’s new bank notes have got people seeing things, and it’s not dollar signs. The $100 plastic bank notes go into circulation next month but focus groups have pointed out potential controversial images on the notes.
“The overall purpose of the research was to disaster check the $50 and $100 notes among the general public and cash handlers,” said a January report to the Bank of Canada. The Bank of Canada conducted focus groups all over the country in attempts to receive constructive public feedback.
Almost every group thought the see-through window on the $100 dollar bill looked like a woman’s body. There was also an image of a researcher at a microscope and a depiction of the double-helix structure of DNA. A Vancouver focus group thought the DNA strand was a sex toy. Get your mind out of the gutter people.
Once feedback from the focus groups were received, the designs of the bills were tweaked, so don’t worry about blushing when your grandma hands you a $50 and says you should spend it on something pleasurable.
Sex is a big part of our every day lives and our currency is a reflection of our national self-image. It’s not surprising our dollar bills contain some sexual imagery, even if it’s all in our minds.
