Abortion Is A Human Right
October 28, 2011 No CommentsWe own our bodies, and the government cannot step in and tell us what to do with them. That doesn’t sound too outlandish, right?
A recent United Nations report stood up for this idea, saying that a woman has a right to her own health and body. Although the idea seems simple it goes against the policies of most American red states, The Philippines, Chile, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Malta, Nicaragua, Uruguay and the Vatican. A whole lot of people have a problem with this basic women’s right.
The UN report also stated that governments that limit a women’s right to abortion or birth control are violating their basic human rights. It’s sort of like forcing a cancer patient to forgo treatment or restricting the use of antibiotics. Of course pregnancy is by no means a disease, but it is a health issue that a person has a right to treat any way they choose.
The UN brought up another important but widely ignored point: it is wrong to prosecute women who take drugs or drink alcohol during pregnancy. It is her body and her health.
This idea is also a controversial one. Some may think it fails to protect an unborn child from an irresponsible mother, or that endangering a pregnancy deserves punishment. But when it comes to basic rights and equality, this idea is right on the mark.
Everything in this report make sense when it comes to basic human rights. Yet they face opposition from numerous countries and politicians. Unfortunately, the UN can spew out gold mines of sense but that does not mean anyone will listen. These ideas need to go forward and become legislation that we can fight for.
