The Feminist Photo Blog Project
November 8, 2011 No CommentsThis month marked the launch of an exciting, yet simple feminist endeavor called the Feminist Photo Blog Project.
A new Tumblr is encouraging people from around the world to send in feminist-identifying self-portraits to create a visual representation of the various faces of feminism:
- I hope to capture the many different faces of feminism with this photo blog project. It will require people power, but with now 7 billion (and counting) people on Earth, that shouldn’t be a problem now, should it? Email: feministphotoblogproject@gmail.com with your own feminist picture!
Riding on the coattails of the We Are The 99 Percent Tumblr blog, the Feminist Photo Blog Project is another platform for global citizens to offer powerful, social commentary in a simple way. This growing collection of self-portraits celebrates our individual diversities while symbolizing our collective solidarity. In doing so, this social media venture helps diffuse feminist stereotypes and encourages the de-stigmatization of the feminist movement, which in some circles, still carries the reputation for being a radical, ideological niche — “Oh, those silly Femi-Nazis!” It is also a reminder to those of us who consider ourselves members of the feminist movement that we belong to a community of complex individuals; that there is strength within our collective unity; that we are not alone in our frustrations, passions, and dreams.
The Feminist Photo Blog Project is not only a challenge to feminists to fly their femi-flag, but also a celebratory declaration of our pride, and a social experiment in regards to the potential ideological-changing power of modern media. At this moment in time, the project has gained participation from 126 self-proclaimed feminists who have stepped up to the camera and shown us “what a feminist looks like,” and the collection of faces already reflects a heartwarming rainbow of diversity.
So, ladies and gents, I challenge you to grace the world with your unique face of feminism by participating in the Feminist Photo Blog Project. Don’t forget to share this project via Facebook, too. I will be sending in my feministy photo this week, and I hope to see your mugshot next to mine.
