Fly The Very Friendly Skies: Transport Canada Website Offers Aviation And Prostitution
November 8, 2011 No CommentsA government website that used to promote Canada’s 100th anniversary of flight is now advertising Turkish and American prostitution. They were late on their payment for their domain name and subsequently lost it to a group of pimps.
A site meant for celebration and pride, the domain was purchased by Transport Canada to last until December 2009. The centennial for which the site was purchased was a huge government event with film screenings, air displays, and even more promotion for the event. But someone must have forgotten to cancel or make a payment. So, once December 2009 rolled around and the $11.95 bill was unpaid, the domain was up for grabs. And grabbed it was.
The funniest part of the whole scandal is that the website, under new management, still advertises from the sponsors of the Transport Canada site like Aerospace Industries Association of Canada and National Defence. And next to those? Links to websites for escorts in Washington D.C. and Istanbul. Classy.
The new owners even acknowledge how crappy they are, stating, “To previous domain owner: We bought this domain after expiration so it’s not our fault that you lost it. We put old content for this domain only to avoid losing good quality of it from SEO point of view. If it’s a problem for you contact us ASAP!” Harsh, but who’s fault is that?
“It’s a good historical reference. Now it promotes D.C. hookers,” says Chuck Black of Commercial Space, an aviation industry website. Couldn’t have said it better myself, Chuck.
