Jail For Murderer Of Ugandan Gay Activist
November 11, 2011 No CommentsDavid Kato was murdered in January this year in what was a controversial case.
He was an active gay rights activist in Uganda, a country where homosexuality is illegal and where a bill is waiting to be decided on that will give the death penalty for being gay or for having HIV. Other activists claimed Kato was killed in a hate crime, but this was never proven.
His murderer, Enoch Nsubuga, did, however, say he beat Kato to death with a hammer because of “unwanted demands for sex.”
Sounds like it may have had something to do with him being gay after all. Or is this really a case of Nsubuga being sexually assaulted and fighting back in self-defense? That, we will never know.
Kato’s family has now been given justice because Nsubuga has been convicted to 30 years in jail. Who knows how this decision will change things, but hopefully all the international attention and local gay rights activists will put some pressure on their government to do the right thing.
