Gender Bending The Internet

November 17, 2011 No Comments

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if women controlled the power structure? Now you can find out.

A new Google Chrome extension developed by Danielle Sucher lets you gender-bend the entire internet. Jailbreak the Patriarchy  switches male names to female names and hims to hers. It is advanced enough to understand which words, like chicks, have multiple meanings and how to change them correctly.

Turn on this app and enter a world where gender stereotypes are the opposite. Some may criticize the program as just a toy for feminist geeks. But imagine the potential. What if Jailbreak the Patriarchy was utilized by sociology and women’s studies classes? Or even history classes? It could offer us a much better understanding of the sexual power structure.

We are not crazy feminists who want women to take over the world and enslave men. This is not what this tool is about. It’s about pointing out that things really would be different if women were written about the way men are written about. If you don’t believe me, try it and see for yourself.

Think of how great it would be if we turned Tom Sawyer into Tammy Sawyer or little orphan Oliver into Olivia. Maybe if these classic novels were centered around women more young girls would be turned on to reading. Imagine a whole series of famous novels where the genders are reversed! Someone needs to get on that. I can’t imagine anything better than a female Lord of the Rings.
