Unicorn Collection Is For Children, Not Grown Women!

Dear Madame X,
My girlfriend is obsessed with unicorns. She collects unicorn toys, and has pictures of them all over her bedroom. I think this is very strange for a 34-year-old. Does this mean she is crazy? Should I dump her?
Unicorn Hater
Dear Hater,
Plenty of people have plenty of strange collections. There are people with everything butterfly, elephants everywhere, cat figures galore. I think that it’s possible to have a collection like this and still be a grown mature adult woman.
Maybe she is eccentric. Maybe it can be cute. I guess what I would want to know is the degree of the obsession. Is it just a carry-over from childhood? Something that brings fond memories and that she likes the look of? A few things here and there? Or is every room filled with unicorns and there is no escape? Does she talk about them all the time? Wear unicorn t-shirts?
If you live together and it makes you uncomfortable then maybe you could compromise and have a few choice items to accent the walls but keep the majority of the collection in a private room.
But if you are wondering if this is a sign of immaturity then you need to look at her whole personality and behaviours — not just this one oddity.
Figure out if it’s an eccentricity you can live with or if it’s something you have to address — before you do something that might be damaging to your relationship.
You need to accept her for who she is, but you also need to find a way to co-exist that works for you both.
