Marriage Insurance Will Pay You To Stay Married
April 30, 2012 No Comments
Marrying an old rich guy and divorcing him may no longer be the only way to make a profit off nuptials. A US insurance company will pay you to work out your problems and stay married.
SafeGuard Guarantee Corp. will offer marriage insurance that protects couples who get divorced, but will also give couples an incentive to stay together. The longer you stay together, the more money you get. A couple who buy marriage insurance from the start could receive a $100,000 payout if they stay together for 25 years.
That’s some incentive. Does this company really care that much about saving marriages, or is there something else going on here? The insurance was developed in 2010 but is not currently being offered. SafeGuard hopes to expand the service to Canada but would need approval first.
This insurance, if it starts to be offered again, could have a couple of effects. It could actually give people a reason to stay married — but do we really want people to stay together just for money? An unhappy marriage is unhappy with or without a $100,000 incentive. It’s one thing if a couple tries to work things out after the romance has died, or maybe even after an affair. But if there is domestic violence going on, paying people to stay together may not be a great idea.
